This stunning boy is Bear, and he came in as a cruelty confiscation from the Stark County Ohio Dog Wardens office. Bear was dumped in the yard of an elderly man who already had too many dogs but who could not fathom the thought of this gentel giant being on the streets. Making it even worse is the fact that Bear is 11 years old and totally blind. Sadly, the man was overwhelmed by the dogs in his care and the warden had to step in to help.

The GREAT news is that we where contacted and Bear came to us to live out the rest of his life. He is happy and healthy and is doing very well in our special senior/hospice foster home in Hamburg NY. He prefers the quiet atmospher there over the very active lifestyle here at the sanctuary, and his foster mom Karen just LOVES him to pieces!

Latte and Sage are daughter and mother, from a puppymill in Virginia. When they where no longer able to produce large litters of pups, the breeder dumped them at a local dog pound. Luckily someone saw them and forwarded their info to us here at the sanctuary. They wher in very poor condition with scraggly coats, low body weight, worms and Sage had many rotten teeth.

That was 3 years ago and now both dogs are very healthy and happy and are enjoying the good life. We had the Plum Girl Scouts come and build a special building that these two as well as some of our other special needs dogs could use if they where out in the fenced yard and just wanted to get in out of the heat or cold. The picture shows Latte on the left and Sage on the right in front of their new building along with the girls who built it.

Hope (on the left) is our most senior resident. In February she will turn 21 years of age! Yes, that is about a bajillion in human years. Hope was a cruelty confiscation from the Stark County Ohio Humane Society. When we heard that there was a 19 year old lab mix living at the shelter we went straight there to bring her back to the sanctuary. At that age the shelter in no place to live out your life. As often happens we thought we would give her a few good weeks or months of love and attention.......that was almost 2 years ago! I am happy to say that Hope is doing very well and is the boss of the entire pack here. We are hoping to have a lot more time with this special girl.

Sammy, or Sam The Ham as he is known is a real charmer. He has been here at the sanctuary for 5 years now, coming from Irving Texas. He was given up by the family that could not care for him any longer at age 10. He was heartworm positive, 40 pounds overweight, and had horrible ear infections. He also has a heart as big as he is and just loves everyone he meets. Being the perfect representation of the Labrador breed, Sammy has been our ambassador and my constant companion since the moment he arrived. Sammy is getting on in years now and has slowed down, but still loves road trips and meeting new people.

Sandy is a 13 year old golden retriever who live her entire life as an Amish puppymill breeder in Lancaster County PA. For those 13 years she lived in a small rabbit hutch along a busy road with no love or attention. For years a very nice lady would stop in every few months and ask if the breeder would please give her up to be rehomed. FINALLY he gave in and Sandy came to us here at the Shades Of Grey Sanctuary. She had a lot of fear issues when we got her in February of 2015, but now she has become a part of the family and is living the good life in her retirment.

This is Daisy. Breaks my heart to see an older girl in this condition. She is coming to us tomorrow with her 9 newborn puppies. She is thin from taking such great care of the pups, Her foot was broken at some time and nothing was ever done for it. We will have her evaluated when she is feeling better and the pups are weaned to see if it is painful, needs treatment, or possibly need removed. Whatever the outcome, she will be warm, dry pain free and loved for the rest of her life once she gets here. These are the kinds of dogs we deal with on a regular basis. The old, the ill, the broken that have been left down by the humans who where supposed to love them unconditionally. These are Daisy's pups. They where born by accident because their owner did not bother to get their mom spayed, or even keep her in the house when she came into heat. This is not the first litter Daisy has had, but it will be her last. Daisy and her pups will be in our care by this time tomorrow and they will never want for love and attention again. They WILL however need vet care for the numorous conditions that they might come to use with. This includes never being vaccinated, worms, skin conditions, at least one has a hernia and who knows what else. Now take those treatments and multiply them times 9 puppies and you can see how quickly it adds up. These are the kinds of dogs we deal with on a regular basis.
